The Scouts of Troops 391 B & G are excited to offer a new service for the Garner Community this Holiday Season delivering luminaria lanterns for your neighborhood! There is no charge for the kits, but we are accepting donations to help offset the cost. The suggested donation is $10 per kit which contains 7 lanterns.
This is a service project our Troops provide to the community. Our Troops assembled and will deliver over 1,000 kits to more than 500 households this year to help our community celebrate the holidays together.
The tradition begain in 1973 when a local scout troop provided luminaria as a community service. The program has grown over the years to include additional scout troops to help distribute to neighborhoods throughout Apex, Cary, Fuquay-Varina, and Garner.
A luminaria is a holidary lantern that symbolizes peace. A lit candle rests in sand inside a small white paper bag, casting a warm glow in the evenings along the driveways and curbs of our neighborhoods.
Some families choose to decorate their luminaria with drawings or cut shapes in the paper bags. Others memorialize or honor their loved ones by writing their name on the paper bags.
You're invited to join in the tradition as we Light Up Garner!
How? Complete and submit the online order form below.
Where? Our Scouts will deliver the kits to your home the weekend of December 13th. You will prepare & place your luminaria lanterns along the street side of the curb or along your driveway.
When? Light the luminaria by dusk on the evening of December 24th. If it's raining, the first rain date is December 25th. The second rain date is December 31st. If you won't be home, you may want to ask one of your neighbors to place yours.
IMPORTANT! Be safe with fire. Do not light luminaria indoors. Place luminaria on a paved surface - not on grass - grass can and will catch fire!
Troop 391 Community Service
In addition to the holiday luminaria project, Scouts also regularly contribute to our local community by completing service projects. This past year, Troop 391 completed service projects at Lake Benson, White Deer Park, Lake Benson Boathouse, Garner Methodist Church, Timber Drive Elementary School, and Garner Firehouse 1.
